World's largest battery
US-based energy storage company Powin will deliver a GWh battery energy storage system for BlackRock-owned Akaysha Energy to power New York's Waratah Super Battery (WSB) project. South Wales (NSW).
In October, Akaysha Energy was contracted by Energy Corporation of NSW to develop Waratah Super Battery to provide a service of at least MW of capacity as part of a System Integrity Protection Scheme (SIPS).
Powin announced that it would supply the equipment with a capacity of MW of power and MWh of energy capacity, making it the "world's most powerful battery" when operational. Powin will provide , Centipede power segments, while its subsidiary EKS Energy will deliver power conversion systems for a total project capacity of MW/, MWh. The company will also provide a -year long-term se C Level Executive List rvice agreement (LTSA) that will improve the reliability, efficiency and availability of power supplied by the mega battery.
The BESS will act as a “shock absorber” to the electrical grid for system reliability purposes. Furthermore, this SIPS flagship project will unlock latent transfer capacity in the existing transmission system and help integrate renewable energy. The WSB project will ensure Sydney, Newcastle and Wollongong have access to more power from existing generators while reducing the risk of power outages.
The Waratah Super Battery is proposed to be located kilometers north of Sydney at the former Munmorah Power Station, a , MW coal-fired power station serving Sydney, Australia, and beyond. Pending approval, construction is expected to begin in , with an expected completion date of mid-
“Powin’s proven ability to deploy energy storage systems at scale, along with EKS Energy’s unrivaled energy conversion system, plant controller and systems engineering capabilities, has made us choose Powin as our partner.” technology is an easy decision,” said Nick Carter, CEO of Akaysha Energy. “Together, Powin and EKS are one of the few companies best positioned to meet the high performance standards of Australian network operators, as their vertically integrated platform combining hardware and software controls enables faster response time and unprecedented network compliance.
