The survival of cancer patients increases when it is detected in early stages. Now, a team of scientists has developed a non-invasive blood test that could identify tumors up to four years before conventional diagnosis. The description of this still preliminary method, developed for the early detection of five common types of cancer, is published in the journal Nature Communications in an article signed by Chinese and American scientists. If detected early, the tumor can be surgically removed Country Email List or treated with appropriate medications. However, there are only a limited number of screening tests for a few types of cancer. In this study, Kun Zhang of the University of California, San Diego, and his colleagues describe a blood cancer screening test, called PanSeer , that examines cancer-specific methylation signatures in the blood. . Methylation is a process that directs when and how genes that control the development of the organism and that can be affected by environmental causes are activated and deactivated . It plays a crucial role in numerous diseases and in the progression of virtually all types of cancer. To develop and test PanSeer, the researchers performed an analysis of plasma samples obtained from 605 asymptomatic individuals, 191 of whom were subsequently diagnosed with cancer.
